Shadow Work
Psychiatrist Carl Jung coined the idea of Shadow work as a way of examining and scrutinizing the dark and hidden repressed side of one psyche. This work uses tropes common in film to unfold a narrative of a woman releasing this repressed side. This is done by exploring the idea of female rage which is a contemporary concept in films relating to women's reactions to patriarchal oppression and situations that they are forced to endure because of it. By replicating film stills the work creates an ambiguous narrative that depicts a female protagonist's descent into madness and the release of repressed rage. The aim of the work is to resemble a storyboard of a film that does not exist. This is achieved by using a 16x9 aspect ratio and cinematic techniques. Inspiration was taken from “yellowjackets” (2021) and Robert Eggers “the vvitch” (2015). Both are part of the folk horror genre and follow women's descent into madness and violence.
