Man,  Woman, Other

Through the tropes of 1950s and 1960s horror, this work explores gender. Old horror films often portray monsters as allegories for queer identities, so it pays special attention to non-binary genders as they are often seen as 'the other'.  It is the final body from my second year at YSJ. Inspired by classic Hollywood style and general drama, I use this to express the “three” genders. “ man, woman, other.” Each character fits within the societal role placed upon them.

Following in the footsteps of other queer photographers such as Claude Cahun, who used performative photography to create a spectacle and turn gender into a theatrical performance to question its place. This ongoing project of mine will continue to evolve from what it currently is and hopefully grow into an even more extensive body of work.
